Worktable Weekly: Making of a Study Book for Artists (Part IV)

This is Part IV of showing the process of how I made the book to the left. In the first part I cut the paper and boards, and prepared the pages for the book marks that are attached to the page’s corners. In part II the book block got sewn. In part III the boards were prepared. Today I am going to finally attach the covers to the book block and cover the book. In the next and last post, only the final decorations will get added.

Dies ist der vierte Teil des Making of des Buches auf der oben Seite. Im ersten Teil habe ich die Seiten in Form gerissen, die Deckel geschnitten, und die Seiten, die eines dieser Kapitelmarker tragen sollen verstärkt. Im zweiten Teil ging es vor allem ums Heften der Lagen. Im dritten Teil wurden die Deckel vorbereitet, und heute werden endlich die Deckel am Buchblock befestigt, und das Buch eingebunden.  Im nächsten und letzten Blogpost werden dann nur noch letzte Verzierungen angebracht werden.

Das letzte Stand vom Vortag war dass die Deckel soweit vorbereitet waren, dass die Kanäle, in denen die Kordeln laufen sollen schon geschnitten waren, und das Äußere mit Stoff bezogen. Nun werden die Kordeln eingefädelt. Wenn alles gut und richtig sitzt, wird das kürzere der beiden Vorsätze auf die Decke gepappt, gut angerieben, und eine Weile gepresst und getrocknet.

The last time I ended with preparing the covers: Channels to hold the threads were cut, holes punched, and the board was covered from the outside with the fabric. Now it is drz, and the cords get laced in through the board. The cores of the endbands are part of the cover attachment, too.

When everything is neatly in place, I glued down the upper half of the endsheet, the waste sheet on both covers. This is rubbed on gently but thoroughly and briefly let to dry before proceeding. Then the book block then got placed into a press, such that the cords were still outside the press. A piece of leather that is supposed to go on the spine got wet with water. Then I pasted up the spine once again. No paste goes beyond the kettle stitch on the head, but on the tail it got covered up to the end. Then I worked out the cords and formed a narrow spine.

Dann wird der Buchblock so in eine Presse gespannt, dass die Kordeln außerhalb der Pressbacken sind (damit sich nichts eindrückt). Ein Stück Leder, das für den Rücken bestimmt ist, wird feucht gemacht, damit es sich gleich besser formen lässt.

Der Buchrücken wird dann mit Kleister eingeschmiert. Dabei habe ich am Kopfende den Bereich zwischen Kettenstich und Kopf unverklebt gelassen, weil ich das noch für das Kapitalband brauche. An allen anderen Stellen wird dann das Leder aufgelegt und gründlich angerieben, und die Bünde schön herausgearbeitet.

The ends of the cords got place decoratively on the spine while the leather rested on a piece of board approximately the thickness of the book. Then the leather got pasted up, gently placed on the cover and rubbed on. Again I work out all the details, first with my fingers, then with a bonefolder. Repeat on the back cover. Still the ends are hanging over the edge of the board.

Finally I cut slits in the leather where the hinge is, and turned in the leather over the boards. Only now a past down is place on the inside of the board. At the spine the leather is simply cut off flush with the headbands. Then the books goes back into the press again over night so dry thoroughly. In the next blogpost you will see the final steps of making this book.

Dann das Buch wieder aus der Presse, und neben ein Brett von etwa der selben Dicke wie das Buch gelegt. Dort ruht nun das Stück Leder zunächst, das auf dem vor mir liegenden Deckel zu Liegen kommen soll. Die Enden der Heftkordeln werden dekorativ angeordnet, und wenn da alles stimmt wird das Leder mit Kleister bestrichen und sorgfältig auf den Deckel geklebt. Die Details werden erst mit den Händen, und dann mit dem Falzbein herausgearbeitet. Das Ganze wird dann noch auf dem Rückdeckel wiederholt.

Zu guter Letzt werden dann dann in das Leder, am Gelenk zwischen Rücken und Deckel Schlitze geschnitten, und das überhängende Leder über den Deckel gezogen und auf der Innenseite festgeklebt. Jetzt erst wird hier der Spiegel aufgeklebt.

Über dem Buchrücken wird das Leder einfach auf Höhe der Kapitalbänder abgeschnitten. – Und ab geht’s in die Presse zum Trocknen. Das nächste Mal werden die letzen Verzierungen vorgenommen.
