Tutorial: Indirekt Gluing

Today I glued this Banana paper to book’s board. The paper is very thin and fragile. If you brushed glue onto it directly, it would probably tear under the stress with the added moisture, and even if you were really careful, the glue would most probably sap through to the other side. One way of coping with the sap through is to back the paper like you would back fabric. (Here is a nice tutorial by Cathryn for doing this – but you will need to be registered on the book arts forum to actually see it.) I was not convinced, however, that the paper would be stable enough for the procedure, and so I glued it indirectly. – Really easy, I’ll show you how to do this.

First thing to do is to cover the gray board with white paper. – This I have obviously already done in the picture above. Then cut the banana paper to the right size. And then follow the steps in my pictures below:

Heute habe ich das Papier, das ihr oben auf dem Bild sehen könnt, auf Buchpappe aufgezogen. Wie ihr sehen könnt, ist das Papier wirklich dünn, und außerdem ist es ziemlich brüchig. Wenn man Leim direkt auf das Papier aufbringen würde, würde es wahrscheinlich reißen, und sehr wahrscheinlich würde der Leim auf die andere Seite durchschlagen. Ein Weg mit dem Durschlagen des Leims umzugehen, ist das Papier zu hinterkleben, wie man es mit Stoff auch macht. (Hier findet ihr eine schöne Anleitung dafür von Cathryn allerdings auf Englisch, und ihr müsst euch für das Forum registrieren, um das sehen zu können.) Ich habe Zweifel, dass dieses Papier es überhaupt aushalten würde, wenn man es so dick mit Kleister bestreichen würde, und so habe ich es indirekt angeleimt. – Das geht ganz einfach, ich zeige euch mal wie:

Als erstes habe ich die graue Buchbinderpappe mit weißem Papier eingeschlagen, weil man das ja durch das Papier durchsehen kann. Wie ihr oben im Bild seht, ist das bereits geschehen. Dann wird das Bananenpapier auf die richtige Größe gebracht, und eine Fläche gesucht, auf der der Leim nicht haftet. Ich habe einfach ein Plastikbrettchen für solche Zwecke reserviert.

Das wird nun mit Leim auf einer Fläche die etwas größer ist als das Papier gleichmäßig eingestrichen:

Choose a surface to which your glue does not stick permanently. – I reserve a plastic chopping board for that purpose. – And cover evenly with glue an area that is slightly larger than the paper.

Als nächstes das Papier auf den Leim legen und leicht andrücken.

lay the paper in the glue, and rub it on carefully, maybe just tapping if the paper is very fragile – as if you wanted to glue it to the plastic

Nun das Papier abziehen und auf eine saubere Fläche legen. Die Oberfläche sollte nun leicht mit Leim bedeckt sein.

Then peel the paper off the plastic (don’t let it soak too much water, so be fast without being hectic). Place it on a dry and clear surface, with the glued face up. If you look carefully you can see the thin layer of glue on the surface.

Jetzt wird die Pappe da drauf gelegt, und alles andere geht eigentlich wie immer: Leicht andrücken, dann Ecken abschneiden und einschlagen.

All other steps are just like you know them: Place the board in the middle of your glued paper and rub it carefully on. Then cut off the corners, and cover your board.

So, fertig, und schön trocken und sauber von außen. .

Done. Neatly covered, without distortions, drops or dirt on the outside. Well no dirt that was not already in the paper. 🙂

Have fun trying it yourself. You can easily glue for example tissue paper this way. Whether is would be wise to use this now as a book cover is written on a different page! I am going to cover it in leather now. But first cut some holes into the leather…

Viel Spaß beim Nachmachen! Man kann mit der Methode viele Papiere kleben, mit denen man sonst Schwierigkeiten hat. Zum Beispiel Seidenpapier, oder sogar Servietten. Dass es nicht weise ist, solches Papier als Bucheinband einfach so zu benutzen brauche ich wahrscheinlich nicht zu betonen.
