I bought a corner chomper recently. It was on sale, and I thought, I would find a use for it eventually, and bought it. Now I made the first book which makes use of the new tool.
I am both pleased and disappointed with it. I am pleased because I like the look of the book I made with it. And I am a little annoyed that it got dull so fast. It is really only good for punching cards with it. The first signature was punched as a whole. Then it would only bite through 3 folios, 2, and very soon only one, so that I was punching folio by folio for the book.
Ich habe mir diesen Ecklocher letzens gekauft, und ich bin ein bisschen zufrieden, und auch ein bisschen unzufrieden mit dem Gerät.
Ich bin zufrieden, weil das Buch, das ich damit gemacht habe, wirklich schön geworden ist. Und ich bin unzufrieden, weil er ziemlich schnell stumpf wurde. Die erste Lage habe ich noch als Ganzes gestanzt, aber bald schon wollte er nur noch eine Doppelseite auf einmal. – Und das war dann doch so viel Arbeit, dass ich mir nicht so sicher bin, ob ich das nochmal machen würde.
Auf der rechten Seite kann man mal das Muster sehen, dass der Locher stanzt. Bei der Karte sind die 4 Ecken gestanzt, und das Muster in der Mitte ergibt sich, wenn man die Eck-halterung rausnimmt, und einfach mittig stanzt.
On the right you see again the pattern that is generated by the tool. The 4 corners are chomped. And additionally one can remove the corner gauges, and then one can make the hole that you see in the middle.

What a shame the tool became so dull so quickly – the decoration is very pretty, and the book gains a lot of character with the corners chomped. Any idea if you can have it sharpened?
I have no idea whether it can get sharpened, I suppose it can’t. But it is also still cutting cardstock as it is supposed to. And since it was only advertised as to work with such, I probably have no right to complain.

also das mit den Stanzis ist manchmal schon ein Ärgernis, manchmal hilft öfter stanzen mit Alufolie, das schärft ein bisserl.
Allerdings hast Du eh ein eher unpraktisches Modell erwischt erstens weil Du nur eine ganz kleine Auflagefläche für Deinen 90 Grad Winkel hast und bloß so ein kleines Druckknopferl zum Stanzen,
Also mit den easy punch Stanzen hab ich gute Erfahrungen die haben einen Hebel zum Stanzen für Ecken aber auch nur eine kurze Anlage.

allerdings sind alle Handstanzer nur für wenig Papier geeignet

Ich hab’ halt was billiges gekauft, das ist eben häufig eine schlechte Entscheidung. Also danke auch für die Links, da werde ich mich demnächst mal in Ruhe durchklicken.

What a shame the tool is so flimsy. I do like the effect of all the cut corners. But they really are made to be basically a scrapbooking gadget, and not meant for stacks of paper. I’m surprised you were actually able to chomp that many pages at once at all, even when it was brand new and sharp. I’ve never been able to do more than a single piece of paper or cardstock at a time with those little gizmos. If I’m reading the other comment in German correctly, I’ll confirm that punching aluminum foil, as well as waxed paper, helps to sharpen and refurbish them a little bit. I do hope you’ll find a way to shape pages without too much tedium–I like the effect.
Ui, diese gestanzten Ecken sind superschön geworden! Das Lochmuster ist mal was anderes und passt wirklich gut zum Buch. Es gibt diese großen Stanzer, die auch durch dickeres Material kommen, die wären für Heftlagen vll. besser beeignet, aber die haben leider kein Lochmuster.

I have been using this one forever http://www.weronthenet.com/corner-chomper and so far it hasn’t dulled. Been happily chomping away sections a a time (heavy weight watercolour paper) and greyboard up to 5 mm in thickness for over 18 months now. You are however quite limited in the corners you can get, nothing as fancy as this.
I do like how your book looks although the intricate corner design is kind of wasted on me, I prefer them simply rounded 🙂 But that is a matter of taste, it does have a certain charm
Oh dear, viele Scrabbooking-‚Gerätschaften’ sind für Buchbinderzwecke wirklich nur zum gelegentlichen Hin-und-wieder-Gebrauch geeignet.
Ein weiterer Nachschärftip (vom Profi) ist dieser: Nachschauen, ob das Stanzmesser aus Metall ist. Wenn ja, dann ein paarmal ganz feines Schleifpapier (schwarz, 1000er/1200er Körnung) stanzen. Das soll helfen. Wenn die Stanze aus Kunststoff ist, dann hilft nix, auch nicht gutes Zureden. ;–)
Thanks to all for further advice! Yes, the essential punching thingie is made of metal – so I’ll try a combination of aluminium foil and maybe very fine grained sandpaper.

Ich werde also mal schauen, ob Alufolie stanzen hilft, und wenn’s gar nicht mehr geht, auch Schleifpapier versuchen – das Stanzteil selbst ist in der Tat aus Metal, und das Gerät ziemlich schwer, schwerer und stabiler als ich selbst erst dachte. – Mal schauen, ob ich es nochmal erfolgreich einsetzen kann!

I had a photo album returned to me in which the corners have holes in them. I figured I would probably get a corner punch for it. You’ve really inspired me to do so. I love this!
I wonder if there are commercial quality corner punches that would continually do signatures without dulling too much?

In answer to your question: I don’t know much about chompers, this was the first one I tried. But if you click on the links in the previous comments, you will find several pages, in English language, that were recommended to me.
Liesan recommended the Crop-A-Dile for whole signatures, as you can see. Unfortunately I don’t know more.
P.S.: Dein Büchlein mit den mühevoll gestanzte Ecken macht einen vornehmen, an viktorianische Poesialben erinnernden Eindruck.
