This is the book that I finished today. I made it for myself: Sewing on Cords, partly with 1-X in the terminology of K.Smith. Inspired by this book which I saw via the artes del libro blog, I added string to easily access different sections of the book, which have different paper. I want to test myself how well the pages hold up to this kind of stress before offering this for someone else.
Das ist das Buch, das ich heute fertig gemacht habe – und zwar zur Abwechslung mal wieder für mich selbst. Mit 3 Sorten Papier: Eines für Beistiftzeichnungen, das ist leicht cremefarben, ein ganz weißes für Buntstift, und am Ende noch ein bisschen Aquarellpapier.
Die einzelnen Teile mit unterschiedlichem Papier schlägt man ganz leicht mittels der Bänder auf, die ich statt eines Fingerregisters angebracht habe. Die Idee hatte ich, als ich dieses Buch hier auf dem Blog artes del libro gesehen habe.

I am curious though: how well does this binding keep the book together? It looks even more ‘wobbly’ than regular coptic bindings are
It is more wobbly than my regular coptic bindings.
I am going to test how bad or good that feels when I use it. The side effect of being wobbly is, that it opens and lies on the table better than any book I used so far.
I am not very good at this style of binding yet, especially if it has a glueless spine. I made three books with this binding so far (several more with a glued spine), this is the forth, and the other three are all less wobbly. Therefore I also blame the landscape format.

Hilke, hi, darüber hinaus sind auch die Illustrationen in der Äthiopischen Bibel eine Analyse wert. In dem Stil könnte ich mir durchaus Linolschnitte vorstellen. Was meinst du dazu?

I used the book a little by now, and it turns out that it holds up well to being carried around in a bag, and for writing and sketching in it, sitting in a street cafe. It is the connections between the boards and the book block that is a little too loose (and in the meantime I understood what didn’t went right; will fix it the next time.) The book block itself is not too wobbly and feels good during use.
@the book I took the inspiration from: There the tassles at the pages seem to have a slightly different function. If I understand correctly, the pages are made from parchment, and the tassle is attached to every page. I assume to make is easier to turn the stiff pages.
The book itself is structurally different too, of course. I might try making something closer to a replica, though. It is a very beautiful book with an interesting structure.
Vielleicht könnte so eine Replik dann ja auch Linolschnitte enthalten, das ist gar keine total schlechte Idee ich arbeite ja eigentlich gerade noch an einem Band der nur Linolschnitte enthält. Bin da aber noch nicht weit gekommen. Genau genommen habe ich erst einen Haufen Skizzen, mit dem ich noch nicht so ganz glücklich bin. Inhaltlich wäre der vielleicht gar nicht so schlecht geeignet, und eine kleine Auswahl an Pergament für das ich noch keine Verwendung gefunden habe, habe ich auch noch hier.

Hilke, hi, meinst du ‚richtiges’ Pergament? Da habe ich – bis auf Blind- und Goldprägung – keine Erfahrungen. Ich würde auf kleinen Stückchen testen. In jedem Fall mit feinstem Schmirgel Oberfläche glätten, oder mit Fensterglas-Scherbe vorsichtig schaben. Es ist in jedem Fall wg. der inhomogenen Oberfläche nicht einfach. Sorry, mehr weiss ich auch nicht.
