This is the second part of the instruction of how to make the book that you see on the left. In the first part, I told you how I set the red hearts into the black leather, so that now I have everything in place to start constructing my case. There are 4 pieces of leather: 2 for the spine, and one for each of the boards.
Willkommen zum zweiten Teil in der Beschreibung, wie ich das Buch auf der linken Seite gemacht habe. Im ersten Teil, habe ich gezeigt, wie man die roten Herzen in das schwarze Leder einsetzt. Jetzt geht es daran, den Einband fertig zu machen. Ich habe 4 Stücke Leder auf meinem Tisch: zwei rote für den Rücken, und zwei schwarze, eines mit den eingesetzten Herzen für die Deckel.
I start with the larger piece for the spine. I mark the position of the boards, and cover the piece of leather in glue. I use a mixture of wheat and rice starch paste with a bit of Planatol Elasta N, a bookbinding glue that stays water soluble, also after drying.
Los geht es mit dem größeren der beiden Stücke für den Rücken. Mit Beistift habe ich auf der Rückseite die Position der Deckel eingezeichnet. Und nun wird das Stück angeschmiert. Zum Kleben benutze ich, wie meistens wenn ich mit Leder arbeite, eine Mischung aus Reis-und Weizenmehlkleister mit einem bisschen Planatol Elasta N drin, ein Buchbindeleim, der auch nach dem Abbindern noch wasserlöslich ist.
Here both boards are already attached. If you look closely you can see that on the lower excess leather there is less glue: Here I had placed a straight edge to make sure the covers are straight and at the same height.
Auf dem Bild sind die Deckel nun angesetzt. Wenn man genau hinschaut, kann man sehen, dass ich ein Stahllineal an die Unterseite gelegt hatte, damit die Deckel wirklich gerade sind.
Next are turn ins, but before I do that, I cut a piece of cotton string to form something like headbands. This is an idea I found in K. Smith’s “Quick Leather Bindings”. The whole case construction is similar to the construction he introduces there. Just some details are different: He doesn’t use paste for gluing, and makes no full leather bindings.
Als nächstes werden die Enden eingeschlagen. Aber bevor ich sie ganz fest klebe, schneide ich zwei Stücke Baumwollkordel zurecht, um sie als eine Art Kapitalband einzubauen. Die Idee habe ich von K. Smith, aus dem Buch “Quick Leather Bindings”. Die ganze Konstruktion des Einbandes ist von dort ein wenig abgeschaut und verändert.
So these cotton bands are cut, and placed between the boards. Then the leather is turned in.
Hier sind die Baumwollkordeln eingelegt.
Above you see how it looks like when it is done. I take good care to rub the leather into all the corners, and at all edges with a bone folder. Also when turning in, it is important to make sure that the leather forms no hollow on the board’s edge (see image below).
Und so sieht es aus, denn alles fertig ist. Ich achte darauf, wirklich alle Ecken und Kanten mit Leder bedeckt zu haben, und reibe es mit dem Falzbein schön in alle Ritzen. Vor allem auch auf den Kanten des Deckels ist es wichtig, dass sich kein Hohlraum bildet (s. Bild untern).
Next the remainder of the inside spine is filled with the second piece of leather. It doesn’t have to fit seamlessly because this will be hardly visible, but it should fit as good as you can make it, and it should be a seam at most no real gap.
Als nächstes wird der Rest vom Rücken mit Leder ausgefüllt. Bevor ich anklebe, wird das Stück evtl. noch zugeschnitten. Die Nähte werden nur ein wenig sichtbar sein, deshalb ist es nicht so wichtig wie bei dem Einsetzen der Herzen, dass es wirklich gut anliegt, aber natürlich will man hier keine wirkliche Lücke haben. Das Leder wird gebraucht, um den Rücken stabiler zu machen (ich werde ja später durch das Leder hindurchnähen), und außerdem sieht eine zu große Lücke hässlich aus.
Everything gets rubbed on neatly. As you can see the hinge is built on the inside of the cover.
Wieder wird alles ordentlich angeriegeben. Wie man sehen kann, wird das eigentliche Gelenk auf der Innenseite des Deckel gebaut. Der Platz, der für den Buchblock bleibt ist also die Breite des Rückens, minus zweimal die Pappstärke minus zweimal die Dicke des Leders.
Next on is the front cover. The leather piece with the insets is treated just like one piece of leather. It gets covered in paste, and is then glued to the front cover. Using mainly paste insures that I can move around the leather a while. I push it firmly in the direction of the red leather to make sure that no board becomes visible at the seam. Make sure you cut the edge where the leathers come together real neat and straight. If done well you cannot feel a seam at all; and of course seeing a bit of board it a no-no. Also make sure that the turn ins are of approximately the same size as for the spine piece. (Since the leather is cut to the same height, all that needs to be done is ensure that a deviation from equal turn-ins for the red leather is compensated.)
Als nächstes wird nun das Leder für den Vorderdeckel angesetzt. Dafür wird das Lederstück mit den Herzen darin eingeschmiert, und wird dann auf den Vorderdeckel geklebt – ganz so als wäre es ein ganzen Stück Leder und nicht zusammengesetzt. Da ich hauptsächlich Kleister benutze, kann ich das Leder auf dem Deckel noch eine Weile hin- und herschieben. Es wird ordentlich gegen das rote Leder gedrückt, damit sich hier keine unschöne Kante bildet.
Now the leather needs to be turned in, and first of all, the corners have to be cut. I bend the leather, and mark the edge of the board in the paste. It leaves a mark there, and so I marked the width of the board. With a triangle, I mark a 45 degree angle across the leather, at the board thickness distance from the board’s edge. I then cut not along that line but at a slightly narrower angle, and leave a small tail in the middle just above the corner.
Und nun wird das Leder eingeschlagen. Und, der wahrscheinlich spannendste Teil: Die Ecke muss geformt werden. Bei Papier oder Stoff lässt man die Kanten ja über einander liegen, damit man wirklich nichts von dem grauen Board sieht. Mit Leder kann man das nicht machen, weil das Material zu dick ist. Auf dem Bild oben markeire ich erstmal durch Einschlagen im Leder die Pappendicke.
Then I thin out the leather at the tail, and over the edges right to the line where I marked the 45 degrees. I do this with both corners.
Dann markiere ich mit einem Dreieck einen 45 Grad Winkel, und schneide etwas weniger weg, und lasse in der Mitte ein Schwänzchen stehen. Alles, was über den 45 Grad Winkel heraussteht, wird angeschärft.
Then I first rub the leather against the edge of the board on all three sides, then press the leather down next to the red leather, both at head and tails, and at the front edge. Then the corner is formed by first putting the tails down, then the sides. All grey parts get tugged in, only the smooth outer leather should be seen.
Zuerst reibe ich das Leder sorgältig an der Kante an, die es mit dem roten Leder bildet, und forme dann die Ecke: Alle Stücke werden so nebeneinander angeordnet, dass man möglichst nur die äußere Haut von dem Leder sieht, und nichts von dem anderes gefärbten und matten Inneren.
When this is done, the rest of the leather is rubbed on. Since I have a little bit excess material at the corners, the leather will bulge a little. But since leather is compressible, it is possible to smooth everything out and glue to the board without hollows.
Wenn das gemacht ist, steht das Leder in der Mitte der Kante ein wenig hoch und ab, weil es ja nur an den beiden Enden angerieben ist, und das Material an der Ecke ein klein wenig zuviel war. Leder kann man aber ganz gut ein wenig stauchen. Wichtig ist allerdings, wieder darauf zu achten, dass sich keine Hohlräume über der Deckelkante bildet, also nicth zuviel an der Ecke stehen lassen, und eher doch noch einmal ein bisschen abschneiden, wenn es doch nicht so klappt.
The dull spots here come from paste that touched the leather. Before the endpapers get attached, I simply wipe it with a moist cloth.
So sieht es aus, wenn es fertig ist. die matten Flecke auf dem Leder sind Stellen, wo ich etwas Kleister auf das Leder bekommen habe. Man kann es einfach mit einem feuchten Tuch abwischen.
All corners and the other side are treated the same, and then it looks like this.
Alle Ecken und Kanten, und natürlich auch der andere Deckel werden bezogen und so behandelt, und dann sieht das aus, wie oben auf dem Bild zu sehen.
The sides get filled in. It is a matter of taste how much of the volume needs to get filled. I don’t mind it when there is a little lower part in the covers, but not filling in at all leaves it too deep. You might even prefer to fill it until the insides are completely even.
Weil das Leder ziemlich dick ist, setzt ich jetzt noch eine Fülling in den Raum dort. Ich finde es o.k., wenn es nicht vollständig ausgeglichen ist, und mache die Höhlung nur etwas flacher. Aber das ist Geschmackssache.
And then two pieces of paper get pasted down. – Done!
Und dann wird noch ein Papier als Spiegel auf jede der beiden Seiten geklebt. – Fertig. Auf dem Bild unten sieht man nochmal, wie es von außen aussieht. Direkt durch das Leder werden nun die Seiten genähnt, wie bei den weichen Ledereinbänden. Ich habe einfach eine Langstichheftung gewählt. Wenn du nicht weißt, wie du das machen sollst, schau’ zum Beispiel mal dieses Video an. Ich denke, das ist gut als eine erste Einführung für alle, die das erste Mal so ein Buch machen.

This is how it looks now from the outside. Now it is placed under a weight until it is competely dry. Then I am left with a hardcover case with a spine through which I can sew. All binding types that are used for limp leather bindings could be done. I made a simple longstitch – and assume that you don’t need instructions for that. (If you don’t know how to do this, check this video to see and learn. I think it provides a good point to get started.)
