Hey, it is 2013 already!

I have been reluctant to write this first blogpost in the New Year. When I started this post, I wrote about how the obligation to write a review of the last year or at least a list of goals for 2013, kept me from posting earlier. Then deleted it and restarted. I wrote that I didn’t really feel up to it, since the last year has been one with little accomplishments, ruled by to few time for anything serious, and the failure to work through my to-do lists, and ended with a serious enough cold and cough to last for two weeks. Deleted that and restarted. And in this process, while I was still thinking about it, I realized that looking back at 2012 is good for me. Since the kids were born one and a half years ago I have been struggling to get done what lies immediately before me and I pretty much lost sight of the big picture. But that obviously clouds my view of what I am getting done nevertheless.

Thinking about it, I must say I am quite proud of what I managed to do this last year: In April hubby started to work again, and I spent more time with the kids. Instead of taking an extended break I founded Büchertiger Supplies as a new business. I invested in the whole palette of Gruschwitz colored linen thread, my personal favorite choice of bookbinding thread, as well as Goldschild linen thread. It turned out that Büchertiger Supplies was my main focus this last year, partly because selling supplies is less time consuming than manufacturing books and making art. Nevertheless I also finished the edition of The City, one copy of which is now part of a public collection (University of San Diego, Copley Library, Special Collections). I had my first solo exhibition in the summer. My works got published in the gallery book 1,000 Artist’s books. And I finished the development of the bookbinding box for the 2-needle Coptic binding.

So, yeah, 2012 was not so bad. I shall be satisfied if 2013 will be close to that.

So what’s new and what hasn’t been written about because I kept working in silence for the past weeks? Well, as planned I worked through some ugly things like an inventory for Büchertiger Supplies, revamping of shipping costs and item prices, and I closed my books for 2012. I am very satisfied with my new item prices, and I hope my customers will be, too. The prices for Goldschild thread had to rise because the supplier raised their prices and because doing careful calculations showed that all I managed to do with the old price was to break even. On the bright side I added two more colors to the palette: Russet and Hunter’s Green (see pic below). And for all other products the combined costs of shipping plus item price are now lower than or equal to before. The next months will show whether I can maintain this price structure. I believe it will work out in the end because I am reducing my costs by listing the thread differently (there are now combined listings for several pieces of thread) and because I ship them differently. I wrote a catalog, too, which you can download here. Doing all the calculations and lists was tedious work, but also oddly satisfying.  I guess selling stuff is growing on me.

Huch, und schon ist es mitten im Januar! Ein frohes neues Jahr euch allen! Diesen ersten Blogpost im Januar habe ich ziemlich vor mir hergeschoben. Anders als geplant (wer plant sowas schon!), war ich in den 2 Wochen, in denen ich Online-Pause gemacht habe, krank. Das Allernotwendigste habe ich mit Fieber erledigt, aber so einiges ist doch noch liegen geblieben. Und so dachte ich, das neue Jahr also mal wieder mit der Nachricht starten zu müssen, dass ich eine selbstgesetzte Deadline nicht einhalten konnte. Und auf einen Jahresrückblick auf 2012 hatte ich auch keine rechte Lust, weil mir diese Situation doch recht typisch für das ganze letzte Jahr vorkam.

Nachdem ich angefangen habe, hier zu schreiben merke ich allerdings, dass ein Jahresrückblick eine sehr gute Sache ist! Seit die Kinder geboren wurden, habe ich immer nur den Blick darauf, was als nächstes zu tun ist, und muss oft feststellen, dass ich durch meine To-Do-Listen einfach nicht durchkomme. Dabei fehlt mir offensichtlich der Blick fürs Ganze, denn wenn ich auf das letzte Jahr schaue, bin ich ziemlich stolz, was ich “so nebenbei” alles geschafft habe:

Im April hat M. wieder angefangen, zu arbeiten. Statt mich dann voll auf die Kinder zu konzentrieren, habe ich Büchertiger Suplies als eigenständigen Betrieb gegründet. Dieser Teil meiner Selbständigkeit war mein Hauptfokus im Rest des Jahres, zunächst weil der Verkauf von Materialien weniger zeitaufwändig ist, als die Manufaktur von Büchern. Aber mit der Zeit finde ich immer mehr Freude und Gefallen daran, auch weil ich nun mit der vollen Farbpalette von Gruschwitz-Zwirn in meinem Angebot, ein Produkt anbieten kann, von dem ich absolut überzeugt bin. Auch in Goldschild-Zwirn habe ich investiert, und kann mittlerweile die stolze Palette von 26 wunderschönen Farben anbieten.

Trotz der Konzentration auf Büchertiger Supplies habe ich neben einigen Einzelstücken die Edition von Die Stadt fertiggestellt, von der sich mittlerweile auch ein Exemplar in einer öffentlichen Sammlung befindet (University of San Diego, Copley Library, Special Collections). Im Sommer hatte ich meiner erste Solo-Ausstellung. Und einige meine Werke sind im Galeriebuch 1,000 Artist’s Books veröffentlicht. Und dann habe ich  noch die Buchbindebox zur 2-Nadeltechnik fertig gestellt.

Also kein Grund sich zu verstecken. Wenn dieses Jahr genauso gut läuft, werde ich sehr zufrieden sein!

Also was hat sich in den letzten 5 Wochen getan, in denen ich hier Funkstille eingehalten habe? Ich habe meine Preisstruktur bei Büchertiger Supplies überdacht und die Versandkostenpauschale von 5 Euro aufgegeben. Goldschild-Zwirn ist wie angekündigt teurer geworden. Das musste sein, da der Hersteller die Preise angehoben hat, und außerdem meine Jahresabrechnung zeigt, dass ich bei dem alten Preis nur mit etwas Glück keinen  Verlust gemacht habe. Aber bei allen anderen Produkten ist der Gesamtpreis aus Versandkosten und Warenwert leicht gesunken oder zumindest gleich geblieben. Das kann ich durch andere Angebote auf den Plattformen erreichen (statt jede Farbe einzeln, gibt es nun kombinierte Artikel, bei denen du die Farbe per Nachricht auswählst), und durch andere Versandboxen. Ich hoffe, ich werde in den nächsten Monaten feststellen, dass ich die Preise wirklich so halten kann. Dazu gibt es jetzt auch einen PDF Warenkatalog, den du gerne herunterladen kannst, wenn du magst.

Und nun fehlt noch ein Ausblick aufs nächste Jahr. Pläne für 2013 gibt es bereits genug. Für Büchertiger Supplies will ich vor allem die Sektion Anleitungen ausweiten, und in Buchleinen investieren. Aber auch mit Büchertiger Studio & Press geht es weiter. Meine Teilnahme an einem Winter-Swap habe ich bereits zugesagt, die Teilnahme an einem ersten Künstlermarkt ist zugesagt, vielleicht wird noch ein zweiter hinzukommen, und, und, und… Ich hoffe, ihr bleibt weiter dabei und habe Spaß dabei, mir beim Verzwirnen und Verkleben zuzuschauen.
