Calendar

This is a book I made quite a while ago. I think it was one of the first with which I tried this butterfly buttonhole style. It is one of those books that, although they work perfectly well as a book, they still do not fulfill my standards for work I want to sell for money. And thus I neither want to take them apart, nor give them away. In this case the paper is a cheap office paper, the colored flap appeared too floppy to me when I made it, the holes in the cover are not placed perfectly and so on. But when I held it in my hands yesterday, I suddenly liked it again. A lot actually, and so I decided to use it…

Das ist ein Buch, das ich schon vor einer ganzen Weile gemacht habe. Ich glaube, es war das erste Buch überhaupt, das ich mit meiner Variante des Buttonhole Stitch gemacht habe. Als Buch war und ist es natürlich schon verwendbar. Damals hat es allerdings nichts meinen Ansprüchen für ein Buch, das ich für Geld verkaufen will genügt: Der Buchblock besteht aus einfachem Papier, dieses farbige Vorsatz war ein wenig zu labberig und schien sich nicht gut genug anzufühlen, die Löcher im Rücken schienen ein wenig zu nah aneinandergerückt, usw. Aber als ich es gestern wieder zur Hand genommen habe, habe ich mich wieder neu darin verliebt. Und so habe ich es in meinen neuen Kalender verwandelt:

… and turned it into my calendar for the next year. I usually have to-do lists for one whole week, and I wanted space for that. The things I have to remember that are connected with a specific day are usually quick and easy to jot down (like birthdays), and the layout leaves enough space for that. In case I need more space for a specific appointment at a specific day, I don’t mind to jot down that information at the notebook section below the marked days.  The important thing for me is that I will have plenty of space for sketches of what I want to do during the week, it provides a place to doodle a little while planning my time, it still lets me plan my weeks and helps me not to loose focus on important tasks without the need to appoint a specific day or even time to it.

In this manner the first year fills about half of the book. So, if this layout works well for me, and if by the end of next year the second half is indeed still empty and not filled with more notes and sketches, then I could add another full year. – I’ll see. I am pretty sure it will look nice and interesting once it is filled in either case.

Ich habe bemerkt, dass meine to-do listen sich eigentlich immer auf eine ganze Woche beziehen, und da wollte ich für solcherlei Art Termine und Vorhaben ausreichend Platz haben. Und den habe ich jetzt, inklusive Platz für Skizzen und Kritzeleien, Kurznotizen für Ideen und telefonnummer, usw. Und ein bisschen Platz für die Termine, die so anfallen, wie eine Uhrzeit für einen Arzttermin, einen Geburtstag oder ähnliches, bleibt oben in der Leiste natürlich trotzdem.

Das Kalendarium für das erste Jahr füllt etwa die Hälfte des Buches. Wenn dieses Layout gut für mich funktioniert, und am Ende des nächsten Jahres die zweite Hälfte wirklich noch blank ist, könnte ich also ein weiteres Jahr dort eintragen. Aber vielleicht ist es bis dahin auch voll. Ich werde sehen. In jedem Fall erwarte ich, dass es ein Buch sein wird, das ich gerne aufhebe, auch wenn es voll ist.

I have been making my own calendars for years now, always handwritten. Last year I scanned my handwriting and made a couple of them, and offered them for sale. But I threw most of them away, and so I figured it was not worth the time and effort I had put into it. A few days ago, however, I got a call from one of last year’s customers. And she told me that she had given the calender to her daughter-in-law last year, and she now wished for another calendar alike. Although I sadly could not satisfy that customer’s wish, it was such a pleasure to hear that! Now I think that maybe I am going to make more of them next year, after all.

I am still trying to learn whether and what people would like for their calendars. Do you use a specific non-standard layout? – I would love to hear about it!

Ich habe schon lange meine Kalender mit der Hand geschrieben. Ich mag es, dass ich mein Layout auf diese Weise ganz selbst gestalten kann. – Aber es ist auch eine Menge Arbeit! Letztes Jahr habe ich mein Kalendarium eingescannt, erst auf dem Computer und dann in echt kollationiert, und eine Reihe Kalender gebunden. Allerdings habe ich nur etwa die Hälfte von Ihnen verkauft, einen Teil verschenkt, und am Ende einige noch weggeschmissen, weil Kalender, anders als blanke Bücher, ja ein Verfallsdatum haben. Und so hatte ich geschlossen dass es nicht die viele Arbeit wert war, und ich das nicht wieder machen würde.

Vor einigen Tagen bekam ich dann aber so nettes Feedback von einer Dame, die letztes Jahr einen der Kalender für ihre Schwiegertochter gekauft hatte. Diese Schwiegertochter hat sich für das kommende Jahr wieder so einen Kalender gewünscht – da habe ich mich wirklich gefreut! Also wird es vielleicht nächstes Jahr doch wieder einen Kalender von Büchertiger Studio & Press geben.
