H. Kurzke, open edition of Folklórico

Folklórico was one of the topic of the 2022 “Are you book enough” challenge. I first made a one of a kind book, and then started an open edition.

The text is a story written by myself in the form of a movie script: Isabella, a girl from Sheffield with a (part) Mexican background and the ambition to become a professional dancer, drags herself from rejection to rejection to a fight with her parents whether this is a valid career at all. But then her late grandmother’s request from the grave to meet up a Folklórico instructor changes everything.

The development of the book went through several stages:
1st I wrote the story itself
2nd I made a series of screenprinted mono prints to generate the background for the pages with colours and patterns inspired by those used in central America
3rd I learned to weave bands typical for Central and South America
4th I printed the text and collaged it onto the background images
5th I made a first one of a kind original book, using sewn together bands and the original collaged pages
6th I scanned all that.

Now to make your copy in this open edition, I print the pages, and the covers on a firmer paper, and then hand-bind every book.
The finished book is of approximately A6 size, and has 120 pages.
language: mostly English with some Spanish phrases

Each copy of the edition comes packed in a protective sleeve. Available on Folksy and directly through me for £15.
